Aren’t they just going to spend it on drugs?

If you have ever lived in a big city or visited one, the chances of you seeing a homeless person asking for money at a red light are pretty big.

The big question is, what will they do with the money that they are given?

Will they spend it on alcohol and/or drugs? Maybe you are wondering if your money will be going towards supporting their addictions or habits.

Honestly, there is not an easy answer to these questions.

Unfortunately, sometimes that money will go towards supporting their addictions. This is a sad reality that is hard for most people to understand.

In contrast, that money could go towards the only meal they have had all day.  It could also be used to buy cold/hot drinks that could be a lifeline in extreme weather situations.

I feel that when or if you feel led to give money to someone who is street dependent, it has to come with discernment and the ability to give freely without judgement.

You have to be aware of the possibilities of how that money might be used and be ok with giving it. We don’t always know the story of that person standing on the corner with the cardboard sign panhandling. It isn’t our place to figure out what is wrong with them, but it is our place to walk in love and kindness. Whatever that may look like. Whether you give them money or just a smile.
